Growing up around construction and building and renovating several homes, Sydney has been designing spaces, getting hands-on experience and refurbishing furniture for as long as she can remember. As a young girl she would often redecorate her friends’ bedrooms before renovation TV shows were a thing. At the age of twelve, she knew she’d study interior design.

While studying interior design at Illinois State University, Sydney felt the draw to take construction classes for a more comprehensive understanding of the design process. This lead to getting a Master degree in Construction Management a year and a half later.

After completing her Master's degree, Sydney chose to work in construction management for six years.  She moved to St Louis, Missouri and worked at McCarthy Building Companies in building information modeling and working in the field. A love for the Midwest brought Sydney back to Central Illinois where she moved back into design with Workbench Architects and Hewn Architectural Studio for seven years. Here in Central Illinois, Sydney has devoted her career to bettering commercial space experiences from new construction to renovation. Project experiences have ranged from medical clinics, dental offices, therapy facilities, to higher ed, hospitality, and retail. When asked what the favorite part of her job is, it's an easy answer; the thrill of the design process and getting to know each client and their specific needs is what drives her to provide highly custom designed spaces through layout, furnishing, finishes, and lighting.  Inspired by midwestern architect and designer Frank Lloyd Wright, she loves to think about every element, feeling, and experience throughout a space.

TENON - defined.

A mortise and tenon joint connects two pieces of wood or material. Woodworkers around the world have used it for thousands of years. Mortise and tenon joints are strong and stable joints that can be used in many projects.

"I grew up around construction, got a masters degree in construction, and simply love to see things being built. Tenon is a nod to that love and background. I strive to bring both design + a love for building into each project."
